Pioneer Public Buildings

The Old "Bowery" was the first place of
worship used by the members of the Latter
Day Saints Church who came to St. Johns in
1879-1880. The assmbley hall, located on the
northwest corner of the public square, was
erected in 1882. It was built of logs and served
the community for school, church, and all
public assemblies. Here St. Johns Stake of the
L.D.S. Church was organized July 23, 1887. The
church academy was founded January 14, 1889
and the building dedicated December 16, 1900.
